A Novel Method for automatic detection of incipient micropitting in ground surfaces

Micropitting is a surface fatigue phenomenon, on the scale of roughness, which can be significant problem in heavily loaded mixed lubrication contacts power transmission gearing. Modern profilometry equipment allows detailed areal measurements micropitted surfaces to obtained. However, processing these determine extent micropitting difficult and often involves manual or semi-manual evaluation. This paper presents new algorithm allow automated detection micropits ground surfaces, its effectiveness demonstrated by examination taken from test where early stages developed. Comparison with previous methods for evaluating amount based linear profiles clearly illustrates truly three-dimensional nature incipient micropitting.
